Is Your Baby in Danger? Free New DVD Alerts Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers to Hidden Hazards in the Home
Corvallis, OR – According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, each year more than 2.5 million children in North America are injured, some of them fatally, by hazards in the home. Because many of these injuries and deaths could be prevented, the Oregon-based company Parenting Baby To Three is distributing a free DVD pointing out common hidden hazards in the home to parents, grandparents and caregivers of infants and toddlers. Customers pay just a small shipping and handling charge for the DVD (www.childproofingthehome.com).
”By six months, a baby wants to touch, feel and taste everything within four feet of the floor. This is followed by crawling and learning to walk, where a baby grabs onto anything to assist,” says David Epstein, president of Parenting Baby to Three and producer of Childproofing the Home: The Hazards. “The consequences can be tragic, like the case of an infant yanking on an electrical cord when the mother was ironing. The baby was badly injured when the hot iron crashed onto its forehead. The baby also had to spend several weeks away apart from the parents while Family Services investigated.”
Filmed at the eye level of infants and toddlers, Childproofing the Home: The Hazards reveals hidden dangers and obstacles like the sharp corner of a coffee table, dice on the floor, a dangling tablecloth, house plants and many others in the kitchen, living room, bathroom, nursery, garage and outside deck. Before creating this baby’s eye home tour, Epstein researched home hazards for children by speaking with child safety experts and organizations, new mothers and two professional childproofing services.
Epstein also produced a second DVD, Childproofing the Home: The Fixes, which shows a professional childproofer going through the home and fixing the hazards, such as by installing magnetic locks on a bathroom cabinet and doorstops to prevent pinched fingers.
“Most of the fixes are simple and within the capability of someone with do-it-yourself skills,” notes Epstein. “Parents want to protect their children, but they just do not see
things as infants and toddlers do, so the parents and are often unaware of the dangers in their home.”
Childproofing the Home: The Hazards is a 50-minute DVD, available free upon request, with a small shipping and handling charge to cover costs. The order can be placed at www.childproofingthehome.com.
